UK Graduate visa drops to 18 months: the application date matters

For eligible non-doctoral graduates, January 1, 2027 marks the switch from two years to 18 months. Here’s how the cutoff works.

What changes in January?

Eligible graduates with a bachelor’s, master’s or another qualifying non-doctoral qualification will receive 18 months on the Graduate route when they apply on or after January 1, 2027. Applications made on or before December 31, 2026 remain eligible for two years. PhD and other doctoral graduates retain three years. GOV.UK overview ↗

The application date decides the duration

The cutoff concerns when you apply, rather than your graduation ceremony or the date a decision arrives. For example, an eligible non-doctoral application submitted in December 2026 can receive two years even if approved in January 2027. The permission itself begins on the approval date. Check eligibility before planning around the cutoff

Your university must have notified the Home Office that you successfully completed your eligible course before you apply. You must also meet the remaining requirements, including the relevant period of study in the UK. Official eligibility rules ↗

Apply from inside the UK before your Student or Tier 4 visa expires. You do not need to wait for a graduation ceremony or certificate once your provider has reported completion. Check that notification and your visa expiry with your university’s international student team; the December cutoff does not extend your current permission. When to apply ↗

What does this mean for your next step?

The Graduate route remains unsponsored, allowing graduates to work or look for work. For affected applicants, the reduction leaves six fewer months to build experience and plan a longer-term route. Graduate route rules ↗

A Graduate visa cannot be extended. Switching to another route, such as Skilled Worker, may be possible if you meet its requirements. Options for staying longer ↗
