How to use Rilono AI for your US student visa (F-1): a smart, efficient guide

The F-1 journey has a lot of moving parts — admission, the I-20, the DS-160, the SEVIS fee, financial proof and a nerve-wracking consular interview. Rilono AI turns that scramble into a guided, checked, stage-by-stage process. Here's how to use it efficiently so nothing slips before your interview.

Two F-1 rule changes to plan around in 2026

Two changes affect how you prepare this year — one already in force, one landing in September. Read both at the official source before you file anything.

Duration of status ends on 15 September 2026. Under a final rule published on 17 July 2026, F students are admitted for a fixed period — the length of the program on your I-20, capped at four years — instead of the open-ended "duration of status" that F-1 students have held until now. If you need longer than the period on your admission record, you have to file an extension application with USCIS rather than simply remain enrolled — and the grace period after you complete your program drops from 60 days to 30 days. Read the rule itself in the Federal Register, and plan your program length, any thesis extension and your departure date around it.

Your social media has to be public. Since 18 June 2025, F, M and J visa applicants are expected to set their social media profiles to public so they can be reviewed as part of consular vetting, and the DS-160 asks you to list every social media handle you have used in the last five years. Do both before your appointment: switch your profiles to public, and list your handles completely — a handle you left off is an inconsistency an officer can find. Confirm the current requirements on the State Department's student visa page.

What Rilono AI does for F-1 students

Rilono AI isn't a generic chatbot. It's grounded in your data — your profile, your uploaded documents, and exactly where you are in the F-1 process — so its guidance is specific to you. Its core job is mismatch-first review: before it suggests your next step, it cross-checks your profile and documents for contradictions (a name spelled differently on your passport and I-20, a funding gap, a missing page) and flags those first. That's the difference between "here's some general advice" and "your DS-160 surname doesn't match your passport — fix that before you submit."

Step 1 — Set up your account and profile

Choose United States and complete onboarding

When you sign up, pick United States as your destination and F-1 as your visa type. This is what makes every stage, checklist and AI answer F-1-specific rather than generic.

Add your intake semester and year too — Rilono uses them to give you timeline-aware guidance (when to book your interview, when to pay the SEVIS fee).

Why this matters: the more complete your profile — full legal name, university, home country, current situation — the sharper Rilono AI's personalization. A half-filled profile gets you half-personalized answers.

Step 2 — Upload your documents into the encrypted vault

Your dashboard builds an exact F-1 document checklist. Upload each item and Rilono AI extracts, reads and validates it — flagging missing pages, wrong dates, and inconsistencies. The typical F-1 set:

StageDocuments Rilono tracks
Profile & testsPassport, academic transcripts, standardized test scores (TOEFL / IELTS / Duolingo, and GRE/GMAT if relevant), SOP & LORs, resume/CV.
Admission & fundsUniversity admission/offer letter, bank statements, bank balance certificate, loan sanction/approval letter, affidavit of support and sponsor income proof.
I-20 & DS-160Signed Form I-20 (and previous I-20s), DS-160 confirmation and full application, 2×2 photograph, travel history.
Fees & interviewSEVIS I-901 fee receipt, MRV visa-fee receipt, visa appointment letter, and after approval, your stamped F-1 visa.
Pre-departureImmunization / vaccination records and remaining arrival documents.

Your documents stay private. Rilono offers an end-to-end encrypted vault: your passport and financials are encrypted on your device with a passphrase only you hold. Even Rilono stores only ciphertext.

Step 3 — Follow the 7-stage F-1 journey

Rilono tracks your visa process as seven stages and always shows your next best action. Uploading and validating the right documents advances you automatically.

StageWhat it means & what's next
1 · Getting StartedBuild your profile with core academic and test documents.
2 · Admission ReceivedAdmission confirmed — upload your admission proof and a financial-proof document.
3 · I-20 ReceivedUpload and validate your signed Form I-20, then start your DS-160.
4 · DS-160 FiledUpload your full DS-160 and 2×2 photo; next, pay your SEVIS I-901 and visa fees.
5 · Fees PaidSEVIS payment done — book your interview slot and gather interview documents. Appointment waits vary widely by post, so check yours on the State Department's visa appointment wait times page before you fix travel plans.
6 · Visa InterviewPrepare your interview packet and run confidence prep and mock interviews.
7 · Ready to Fly!Visa approved — finish pre-departure documents and travel readiness.

Still deciding where to apply? Stage 2 starts with an admission, and Rilono's AI university shortlist is how you get there: give it your field, budget, GPA and test scores and it returns a deliberate mix of reach, match and safety programs, each with an estimated annual tuition range and, where the data is available, its QS world rank, national rank and application fee — which in the US you pay per university whether or not you're admitted. Results are grounded in live web search, and any link goes to the university's own admissions page, never a third-party aggregator. Prefer to start from real courses? The Course Finder tab (under Universities) lets you browse the US course catalog free — estimated tuition, application fees, intakes, deadlines and entry requirements, with the date each entry was last verified where available — and run an AI course shortlist that you can copy onto your university shortlist in one click (1 free run; 15 runs on the Visa Success Pass).

Step 4 — Chat with Rilono AI the right way

Rilono AI already has your profile, documents and current stage in context — you don't need to re-explain your situation. Because it reviews for mismatches first, the most valuable way to use it is to ask it to check, not just to tell. Prompts that work well:

"Cross-check my passport, I-20 and DS-160 for any name, date or number mismatches before my interview."

"Based on my documents, what is my single next step and what am I still missing?"

"Is my financial proof strong enough for my I-20 amount? What would a visa officer question?"

"Review my SOP for consistency with my study plan and finances."

Ask one focused question at a time, and act on the flagged mismatches before asking "what's next" — fixing inconsistencies early is exactly what prevents a 214(b) surprise at the window.

Step 5 — Prepare for the visa interview

The consular interview is short and high-stakes. Use Rilono's interview-prep sessions to rehearse real F-1 questions — study plans, finances, ties to home, post-study intent — and AI mock interviews to practice under realistic pressure and get scored, specific feedback. The Visa Success Pass adds 3 full AI voice mock interviews that feel closer to the real thing. Not sure what you'll be asked? Study the full question bank first: US F1 visa interview questions & answers (2026).

Efficient loop: run a mock, read the feedback, fix your weakest two answers, run another. Two or three focused rounds beat re-reading a list of questions ten times.

Step 6 — Fill the DS-160 yourself, with Rilono Copilot beside you

When you sit down to actually fill the DS-160 on the government site, install Rilono Copilot — a Chrome side panel that reads the page you're on and tells you, field by field, what to enter, checked against your Rilono profile and documents. It's 100% read-only: it never types or submits for you.

Step 7 — Power features on the Visa Success Pass

Every account starts free with room to try the tools — AI messages, document uploads, interview prep, 1 AI university shortlist, 1 AI Course Finder run, 1 Red-Flag scan and 3 AI SOP actions. The Visa Success Pass is a one-time, 30-day unlock (no subscription) that opens the tools you lean on hardest in the final push:

Seven habits that make Rilono efficient

  1. Complete your profile first. Personalization is only as good as the data behind it.
  2. Upload early, not the night before. The AI can only catch a mismatch it can see — give it your documents while there's still time to fix things.
  3. Fix flags before asking "what's next." Resolve contradictions the moment Rilono surfaces them.
  4. Keep names, dates and numbers identical across passport, I-20 and DS-160 — the single most common cause of trouble.
  5. Run a Red-Flag scan before you submit the DS-160 and again before the interview.
  6. Practice out loud. A voice mock interview exposes gaps that reading never will.
  7. Let the journey tracker drive. Trust the "next best action" instead of guessing the order of steps.
